The key to having a good savings is being smart with how and where you spend your money. This is important before your trip and on your trip too! The smallest decisions you make with your money could have a really drastic outcome, good or bad. So I’m gonna share a few tips & tricks that REALLY work to save money before your trip, and while your traveling.
Saving to travel…
No matter how cheap we want a trip to be, it always gonna cost some money. The best we can do is look at our expenses and find the ones we can reduce or get rid of completely.
For those who love splurging on the daily cup of coffee, you have no idea how much you could be saving. Lets say you spend $4 a day on a cup of coffee. That’s $124 you could be saving in a typical 31 day month. For the entire year that daily coffee habit is costing you $1,460…. That alone could be a one week to one month trip depending on where you go and how you budget. It’s as simple as buying a coffee mug, coffee, making it at home, and bringing it with you. BAM look at that money.
Saving on Groceries
Yes, instead of going out to eat cooking at home can save you A LOT OF MONEY. But Groceries are still costly and something no one can cut out of monthly expenses, please don’t starve yourself to travel! There’s a way to save money in the form of cash back on your monthly grocery bill. The app Ibotta is awesome, I’m a very loyal user. The way it works is every time you need to buy food, go on the app and see what deals they have. For example it’ll give you $0.25 cash back for any brand milk, or $1.00 for hand sanitizer. After you buy what you need. Scan the barcodes to verify the items, then scan your receipt.
Its that easy, they have stores like Meijer, Walmart, Costco Kroger, Target, ect… you can save on more than food items, there’s rebates for cosmetics, cleaning supplies, entertainment, and baby items. You can also earn bonuses for things like redeeming 5 rebates or so. Then when your ready to get the money you earned they send it to your PayPal or in the form of gift cards. Another similar app is Checkout 51. Get a $10 dollar sign up bonus for signing up with ibotta here.
Saving on extra expenses
Sometimes we NEED things like clothes, shoes, travel gear, cosmetics & skin care, ect.. Well on the same note as earlier you can save money while spending money on these things in the form of cash back online, or with the app Ebates. Instead of scanning a receipt though, you need to buy through the links to the stores they provide for you. They have all kinds of stores! Pretty much everything, clothing stores, travel sites for flights, cruises, rental cars, hotels, makeup stores…. Like I said, everything.
Before you click on the link it will say how much percent cash back you will get for a purchase. For example right now you can get 10% cash back on a cruise through Expedia! That’s a lot of money back. Get a $10 bonus for signing up with Ebates here!
Netflix and chill
Netflix can save you SOOOO much money, instead of paying for cable just use Netflix and/or Hulu… If you get the highest plan, which is $12 a month, instead of paying $50 or more for cable you save $38 a month, or $456 a year. They call it Netflix and chill for a reason! You’re so chill from saving so much money! Ok that was bad…
Earn airplane miles
There’s so many credit cards that earn you miles with every dollar you spend. I’m not saying to get yourself in debt and spend money you don’t have. If you use your credit card to buy the things you would normally be spending money on then it can be of great benefit to you. Trade those miles in for airplane tickets and that’s a lot of money you would have saved by spending the same amount of money you normally would. Nomadic Matt has a great guide on picking the right credit card to earn miles here.
Earn extra money
Look around your house. I bet you a million dollars there is several things you do NOT need (you can deposit the money her…. ok I was joking). You can sell your stuff on craigslist or eBay… people even buy things you don’t think are worth anything. You can sell your clothes on the multiple apps out there for that. I once earned $300 one month from selling a bunch of clothes that didn’t fit me. They weren’t anything special but people wanted them.
Have an extra room or an extra house? List it on Airbnb and make money from renting it out. You can rent a private room while your not traveling or your entire house while you are traveling. This is a really big source of income that can fund many travels. Staying in some ones Airbnb can also save you money while traveling because there is often places much cheaper then hotels.
